All the Soldiers Are Hand Jobs

20121118xian_098If there were thousands of humpty dumpties (or is it humpties dumpty?), I think they might’ve had a better chance of putting them back together again. I’m pretty sure that’s what happened with the terra cotta warriors of Xi’an.

They may not have been shattered, but they seem to be locked together in some amalgam mess in the earth, like Play Doh statues that were smashed together with the rest of the doh after you finished playing with them.

All the same, the fact that all of these soldiers are unique is still impressive. I asked a guide if they were made from molds or by hand. Apparently there were different casts for the bodies, but each of the faces were then fine tuned. As the guide told me, “All of the soldiers are hand jobs.” That explains the gestures they’re making in the photo at top anyway.
